Pokémon Emerald Nuzlocke Tier List 2026
Every obtainable Pokémon ranked for Nuzlocke viability. Based on typing, stats, availability, movepool, and matchups against key bosses.
How to read this tier list: Rankings assume a standard Nuzlocke with Dupes Clause. Pokémon available early with good boss matchups rank higher. Within each tier, Pokémon are not strictly ordered.
Swampert WaterGround
The undisputed king of Emerald Nuzlockes. Only one weakness (Grass), which is rare among enemy teams. Handles Roxanne, Wattson, Flannery, and contributes against most of the Elite Four. Mudkip is the best starter choice for Nuzlocke, no contest.
Gyarados WaterFlying
Available everywhere as Magikarp. Intimidate cuts physical damage, Dragon Dance turns it into a sweeper. Handles Flannery and contributes against almost every major fight. One of the most reliable Nuzlocke Pokémon in any game.
Swellow NormalFlying
Taillow is available extremely early (Route 104). Guts + Facade with a Flame Orb or Toxic Orb makes Swellow hit harder than most Pokémon in the game. Fast enough to outspeed almost everything. Incredible offensive threat throughout the entire run.
Magneton ElectricSteel
Electric/Steel typing gives 12 resistances and 1 immunity. Walls Winona entirely. Thunderbolt hits hard. Available in New Mauville. One of the safest Pokémon to bring into almost any fight. Magnet Pull traps opposing Steel types.
Breloom GrassFighting
Shroomish available early on Route 104 (Petalburg Woods). Spore is the best status move in the game — 100% accuracy sleep. Mach Punch provides priority. Handles Norman, Juan's Whiscash, and Sidney. Grass/Fighting coverage is excellent.
Crobat PoisonFlying
Zubat is everywhere. Crobat is one of the fastest Pokémon in the game. Access to Cross Poison, Aerial Ace, and confuse Ray. Evolves through friendship which comes naturally. Handles Brawly and contributes against most fights with sheer speed.
Hariyama Fighting
Makuhita available in Granite Cave. Huge HP stat with Thick Fat reducing Fire and Ice damage. Brick Break smashes through Norman's team. Handles Sidney and contributes against many bosses. One of the bulkiest Fighting types available.
Gardevoir Psychic
Ralts on Route 102 (rare but worth hunting). High Sp.Atk with Psychic, Thunderbolt, and Calm Mind. Handles Brawly and contributes against the Elite Four. Trace ability copies useful abilities from opponents.
Starmie WaterPsychic
Available late (Lilycove, requires Super Rod) but incredible once obtained. Water/Psychic with massive Speed and Sp.Atk. Thunderbolt + Ice Beam + Surf + Psychic gives unmatched coverage. Natural Cure heals status on switch.
Aggron SteelRock
Aron available in Granite Cave. Rock Head + Head Smash is devastating. Huge Defense stat walls physical attackers. Steel/Rock gives many resistances. Handles Winona's Flying types and Drake's Dragons defensively.
Slaking Normal
Slakoth available on Route 104 (Petalburg Woods). Despite Truant making it skip every other turn, Slaking's raw stats are legendary-tier. Hyper Beam or Return hits harder than almost anything. Perfect for one-shot kills on dangerous threats.
Ludicolo WaterGrass
Lotad available early on Route 102. Water/Grass typing is excellent defensively. Rain Dance + Swift Swim makes it fast. Handles Juan's gym easily and contributes against multiple Elite Four members. Diverse movepool.
Blaziken FireFighting
Fire/Fighting is a great offensive type. Sky Uppercut + Blaze Kick provides coverage. Struggles early against Roxanne and Brawly. Shines mid-to-late game against Norman, Glacia, and Sidney. Risky but rewarding starter choice.
Tentacruel WaterPoison
Tentacool is available everywhere on water. High Sp.Def and decent Speed. Sludge Bomb, Surf, and Ice Beam for coverage. Clear Body prevents stat drops. A reliable special tank throughout the game.
Flygon GroundDragon
Trapinch available on Route 111 (desert). Ground/Dragon typing is excellent. Earthquake + Dragon Claw covers most threats. Levitate gives Ground immunity. Available a bit late but worth the wait and training investment.
Manectric Electric
Electrike available on Route 110. Fast Electric type with Thunderbolt. Handles most Water and Flying types easily. Static can paralyze on contact. Somewhat frail but fast enough to usually move first.
Torkoal Fire
Available on Route 112. High Defense makes it a great physical wall. Overheat hits incredibly hard. Handles most Grass and Bug types. Slow speed means you take a hit first, but high Defense compensates. Good pivot option.
Pelipper WaterFlying
Wingull available extremely early (Route 104). Water/Flying is a useful typing. Surf and Fly provide utility. Not amazing offensively but consistent and reliable. Free encounter on many routes.
Absol Dark
Available on Route 120. High Attack with Swords Dance. Handles Phoebe's Ghost types and Tate & Liza. Night Slash and Psycho Cut give good coverage. Glass cannon — hits hard but can't take many hits.
Sharpedo WaterDark
Carvanha available on Route 118-119. Water/Dark with high Attack and Speed Boost ability. Crunch handles Phoebe and Tate & Liza. Extremely frail but hits hard. Good for late-game sweeping.
Sceptile Grass
Fast Grass type with decent Sp.Atk. Handles Juan and some Water types. Struggles against many gyms and Elite Four members. Weakest Hoenn starter for Nuzlocke but not useless. Leaf Blade is strong but coverage is limited.
Medicham FightingPsychic
Meditite available on Route 115 or Victory Road. Pure Power doubles Attack, making it deceptively strong. Fighting/Psychic is a unique typing. Hi Jump Kick is risky in a Nuzlocke but devastating when it hits.
Claydol GroundPsychic
Baltoy available on Route 111 (desert). Ground/Psychic with Levitate. Very bulky and defensive. Earthquake + Psychic for coverage. Not very offensive but an excellent tank and support Pokémon. Handles Wattson well.
Altaria DragonFlying
Swablu available on Route 114. Dragon Dance can make it a threat. Dragon/Flying is decent typing. Low offensive stats before setup. Evolves late and Swablu is mediocre for a long time.
Wailord Water
Wailmer available on Route 110 (Surf). Absolutely enormous HP stat. Water Spout at full health hits very hard. Good as a physical sponge but not much else. Simple but effective in the right situations.
Skarmory SteelFlying
Available on Route 113. Incredible physical Defense with Steel/Flying typing. Walls most physical attackers completely. Low offensive stats mean fights take a long time. Spikes support for team play. Rare encounter.
Beautifly BugFlying
Wurmple available very early but Beautifly's stats are terrible across the board. Bug/Flying typing is weak. Morning Sun for healing is the only notable move. Outclassed by almost everything once you get more encounters.
Dustox BugPoison
Slightly more useful than Beautifly due to better Sp.Def. Can spread status with Toxic and Moonlight for healing. But terrible offensive stats and typing means it falls off fast.
Linoone Normal
Zigzagoon is available on almost every route. Pickup ability is useful for free items. Belly Drum + Extreme Speed is a funny gimmick but risky in Nuzlocke. Overall underwhelming stats. Better as an HM slave than a team member.
Mightyena Dark
Poochyena available early but mediocre stats all around. Intimidate is nice but Mightyena doesn't have the power to threaten much. Dark typing is useful against Phoebe but there are better Dark options.
Castform Normal
Gift Pokémon from Weather Institute. Forecast ability is a gimmick that doesn't compensate for terrible base stats. Normal typing with no standout moves. Not worth a team slot in any serious Nuzlocke run.
Luvdisc Water
Terrible stats in every category. The only useful thing about Luvdisc is the Heart Scale it holds. Even as a Water type, it can't do meaningful damage or take hits. The worst Pokémon in Emerald Nuzlocke.
Sunkern Grass
The lowest base stat total of any Pokémon. Even after evolution, Sunflora is mediocre. Grass typing alone is not good enough, and Sunkern has no way to contribute meaningfully at any point in the game.
Delibird IceFlying
Terrible stats and a signature move (Present) that can heal the opponent. Ice/Flying is one of the worst type combinations defensively. There is no situation in Emerald where Delibird is the right choice.
Best Starter for Emerald Nuzlocke
Mudkip is the best starter for an Emerald Nuzlocke, and it's not close. Swampert's Water/Ground typing gives it only one weakness (Grass), which is rare among important opponents. It handles Roxanne, Wattson, Flannery, and the Elite Four's Glacia effectively. It also gets Earthquake which is one of the best moves in the game.
Torchic is the second choice — Blaziken is a powerful Fire/Fighting type but struggles early against Roxanne and Brawly's gyms. If you can survive the early game, it becomes very strong.
Treecko is the riskiest choice — Sceptile is fast but frail, and Grass typing alone has too many bad matchups. Only pick Treecko if you want an extra challenge.
Nuzlocke Tip: In a Nuzlocke, the "best" Pokémon is whatever you actually encounter. A perfectly ranked S-tier Pokémon is useless if you never find it. Learn to make the most of whatever encounters you get — that's the real skill of a Nuzlocke player.
