Pokémon Emerald Nuzlocke Guide

Everything you need to beat an Emerald Nuzlocke — from starter choice to the Elite Four.

Why Emerald?

Pokémon Emerald is one of the most popular Nuzlocke games. It has a good difficulty curve, diverse encounter tables, and memorable gym leaders. The double battle with Tate & Liza and the challenging Elite Four make it a rewarding Nuzlocke experience.

Starter Choice

Mudkip (Recommended)

Swampert is widely considered the best Nuzlocke starter in Emerald. Water/Ground typing gives only one weakness (Grass), which is rare among enemy teams. It handles Roxanne, Wattson, and Flannery with ease and stays relevant all the way through the Elite Four.

Torchic (Risky but Powerful)

Blaziken is a glass cannon. Incredible Attack and Speed after evolution, but fragile. Great for experienced Nuzlockers who know how to manage risk.

Treecko (Hard Mode)

Sceptile has a rough time against many gyms and the Elite Four. Only recommended if you want an extra challenge.

Key Encounters to Watch For

Must-catch encounters: Magikarp (any water), Abra (Route 116), Geodude (Granite Cave), Ralts (Route 102), Aron (Granite Cave), Tentacool (ocean routes). These Pokémon can carry entire Nuzlocke runs.

Gym Leader Strategies

Roxanne (Rock) — Rustboro City

Easy with Mudkip or any Grass/Water type. Watch out for Rock Tomb lowering your Speed. If you picked Torchic, you need a backup plan — Lotad from Route 102 or Wingull from early routes work well.

Brawly (Fighting) — Dewford Town

His Makuhita has Bulk Up, which can snowball fast. Bring a Flying type like Taillow or a Psychic type like Ralts. Do not let Makuhita get more than one Bulk Up.

Wattson (Electric) — Mauville City

The first real wall. His Magneton has high Special Attack and Voltorb knows Selfdestruct. A Ground type like Marshtomp or Geodude trivializes this fight. Without one, this gym can end runs.

Flannery (Fire) — Lavaridge Town

Overheat from Torkoal hits incredibly hard but lowers its Special Attack. Survive the first hit and you win. Water types dominate this gym.

Norman (Normal) — Petalburg City

The hardest gym in Emerald Nuzlocke. His Slaking hits absurdly hard with Facade, especially if you try to burn or paralyze it (Facade doubles in power with status). Best strategy: use Protect on Slaking's attack turns and hit during Truant turns. Fighting types like Makuhita/Hariyama are your best bet.

Tate & Liza (Psychic) — Mossdeep City

A double battle. Their Claydol and Solrock/Lunatone combo can be tricky. Dark types are ideal. Sharpedo or Absol with Crunch can sweep. Watch out for Earthquake hitting your own partner.

Elite Four Tips

The Emerald Elite Four is tough. Sidney (Dark) requires Fighting coverage. Phoebe (Ghost) needs a Normal or Dark type. Glacia (Ice) is deceptive — her team has Water types too. Drake (Dragon) needs Ice coverage. Steven/Wallace as champion demands a well-rounded team.

Critical: Grind your team to at least level 55 before the Elite Four. Bring plenty of healing items and have a clear game plan for each member.
