A Nuzlocke challenge is a set of self-imposed rules that make Pokémon games significantly harder and more emotionally engaging. Created by artist Nick Franco in 2010, it has become one of the most popular ways to replay Pokémon games.
You may only catch the first Pokémon on each route. If it faints or flees, you get nothing.
If a Pokémon faints, it is permanently dead. Box it or release it forever.
Every Pokémon must be given a nickname to build emotional attachment.
Dupes Clause lets you skip duplicate species. Level Caps prevent over-leveling past the next gym leader. Set Mode removes free switches after KOs. Hardcore Nuzlocke combines all of these with no items in battle.
