Pokémon Platinum Nuzlocke Tier List 2026
Every obtainable Sinnoh Pokémon ranked for Nuzlocke viability. Prepare your team to survive Cynthia's Garchomp.
Platinum Note: Gen 4 introduced the physical/special split per MOVE (not type). This makes many Pokémon significantly better or worse compared to Gen 3. Rankings account for this.
Garchomp DragonGround
Gible in Wayward Cave (hidden entrance). Dragon/Ground with monstrous Attack and Speed. Earthquake + Dragon Claw covers almost everything. Handles Volkner, Flint, and most of the E4. The same reason Cynthia's Garchomp is terrifying — yours can be just as deadly.
Gyarados WaterFlying
Magikarp everywhere. Intimidate + Dragon Dance is the most reliable sweep setup in the game. Waterfall, Ice Fang, Earthquake coverage. Handles Flannery, Bertha, and Flint. S-tier in every generation for a reason.
Staraptor NormalFlying
Starly on Route 201 — your first encounter. Intimidate on a fast, hard-hitting Pokémon. Close Combat covers Rock and Steel types. Brave Bird is devastating. The best regional bird ever made for Nuzlocke.
Infernape FireFighting
Best starter for Platinum Nuzlocke. Fire/Fighting with great Speed. Close Combat, Flamethrower, Mach Punch, Thunderpunch. Handles Gardenia, Byron, Candice, Aaron, and Lucian's Bronzong. Coverage king.
Gastrodon WaterGround
Shellos on Route 205. Water/Ground with only one weakness (Grass). Storm Drain absorbs Water moves. Earth Power + Surf + Ice Beam. Handles Volkner, Flint, and Bertha. The Swampert of Sinnoh — incredibly reliable.
Weavile DarkIce
Sneasel on Route 216-217. Dark/Ice with extreme Speed. Ice Punch one-shots Cynthia's Garchomp (4× weak). Night Slash handles Lucian and Fantina. Glass cannon but the best answer to the biggest threats in the game.
Luxray Electric
Shinx on Route 202. Intimidate is always useful. Thunder Fang + Crunch provides good coverage. Available very early. Handles Crasher Wake's Gyarados and most Water/Flying types. Reliable throughout.
Roserade GrassPoison
Budew on Route 204. High Sp.Atk with Sludge Bomb, Energy Ball, Shadow Ball. Natural Cure heals status. Handles Crasher Wake and Bertha. Sleep Powder for safety. Early availability is a big plus.
Empoleon WaterSteel
Water/Steel gives 10 resistances and 1 immunity. Handles Candice, contributes against Cynthia. Surf + Ice Beam + Flash Cannon for coverage. Excellent defensive typing. Second best starter choice.
Gliscor GroundFlying
Gligar on Route 206 (evolves with Razor Fang). Ground/Flying is excellent — immune to Electric and Ground. Earthquake + Aerial Ace. Handles Volkner and contributes against Flint and Bertha. Very bulky physically.
Togekiss NormalFlying
Togepi egg from Cynthia. Serene Grace + Air Slash = 60% flinch. Thunder Wave + Air Slash locks opponents out. Handles Maylene and Aaron. Fantastic support Pokémon with great Sp.Atk.
Torterra GrassGround
Grass/Ground is unique. Earthquake + Wood Hammer hits hard. Handles Crasher Wake, Volkner, and Bertha. 4× Ice weakness is devastating against Candice and Cynthia's Milotic. Good but that Ice weakness costs it dearly.
Floatzel Water
Buizel on Route 205. Fast Water type with Swift Swim. Waterfall + Ice Punch + Crunch. Handles Flint's Fire types. Frail but fast enough to usually strike first. Good speed lead.
Heracross BugFighting
Honey tree encounter (rare). Guts + Close Combat is devastating. Megahorn destroys Psychic types. Handles Aaron, Sidney analog, and Lucian. If you find one, train it.
Hippowdon Ground
Hippopotas in Ruin Maniac Cave. Sand Stream sets up Sandstorm. Enormous physical bulk. Earthquake + Stone Edge. Handles Volkner completely. Slow but incredibly tanky.
Magnezone ElectricSteel
Magnemite in Fuego Ironworks. Electric/Steel gives 12 resistances. Thunderbolt + Flash Cannon. Magnet Pull traps Steel types. Handles most Flying and Water types. Excellent defensively.
Honchkrow DarkFlying
Murkrow in Eterna Forest (night). Moxie boosts Attack after KOs. Brave Bird + Sucker Punch is strong. Handles Fantina and Lucian. Needs Dusk Stone to evolve. Risky but powerful sweeper.
Lucario FightingSteel
Riolu egg from Riley on Iron Island. Fighting/Steel is excellent typing. Aura Sphere + Flash Cannon. Arrives late and requires friendship evolution, limiting its usefulness. Amazing if you invest the time.
Bronzong SteelPsychic
Bronzor on Route 206. Steel/Psychic with Levitate = only one weakness (Fire). Incredible defensive typing. Trick Room, Hypnosis, Gyro Ball. Very slow but almost unkillable defensively.
Abomasnow GrassIce
Snover on Route 216-217. Snow Warning sets Hail. Ice/Grass has seven weaknesses including 4× Fire. Wood Hammer + Blizzard hits hard. Useful against Bertha and Cynthia's Garchomp but so fragile defensively.
Drapion PoisonDark
Skorupi on Route 214. Poison/Dark with only one weakness (Ground). Battle Armor prevents crits. Crunch + Cross Poison. Handles Fantina and Lucian. Decent stats all around, not dominant in any area.
Bibarel NormalWater
Bidoof on Route 201-202. HM slave extraordinaire — learns Cut, Surf, Rock Smash, Strength, Waterfall, Rock Climb. Terrible combat stats. Simple ability doubles stat changes. Only useful for HMs.
Pachirisu Electric
Route 205. Cute but terrible stats. Outclassed by Luxray and Magnezone in every way. Pick Up ability is nice for free items but not worth a team slot. Replace immediately when better options appear.
Dustox BugPoison
Wurmple on Route 204. Decent Sp.Def but terrible everywhere else. Toxic + Moonlight can stall. Completely outclassed after the first few gyms. Replace as soon as possible.
Unown Psychic
Solaceon Ruins. Only knows Hidden Power. Terrible stats. Not a real Pokémon for battle purposes. Never use.
Kricketune Bug
Kricketot on Route 202. Famous for its cry, infamous for its stats. Bug Buzz is its only notable move. Outclassed immediately by almost anything. A meme, not a team member.
Best Starter for Platinum Nuzlocke
Chimchar is the best starter. Infernape's Fire/Fighting typing with incredible Speed and coverage handles more gym leaders and E4 members than any other starter. Close Combat, Flamethrower, Thunderpunch, Mach Punch makes it a one-Pokémon army.
Piplup is the second choice. Empoleon's Water/Steel typing gives 10 resistances. Safer and bulkier than Infernape but less offensively dominant. Ice Beam handles Garchomp.
Turtwig is the riskiest. Torterra's 4× Ice weakness is a death sentence against Candice, Cynthia's Milotic, and many other threats. Strong offensively with Earthquake but that Ice weakness is crippling.
Cynthia Tip: Your entire team should be built around surviving Cynthia. Her Garchomp (Lv.62, Dragon/Ground) is 4× weak to Ice — bring Ice Beam or Ice Punch on your fastest Pokémon. Weavile with Ice Punch is the best Garchomp killer in Platinum.
