Pokémon FireRed Nuzlocke Tier List 2026

Every obtainable Kanto Pokémon ranked for Nuzlocke viability. Based on typing, stats, availability, movepool, and matchups against key bosses.

How to read this tier list: Rankings assume a standard Nuzlocke with Dupes Clause. Pokémon available early with good boss matchups rank higher. Gen I move mechanics (physical/special split based on type, not move) affect some rankings.
S
S-Tier — The Best of the Best
These Pokémon can carry entire Kanto Nuzlocke runs.
Gyarados WaterFlying
Magikarp available everywhere with Old Rod. Intimidate is game-changing. Dragon Dance sweeps entire teams. Handles Blaine, Giovanni, and contributes against most E4 members. The best non-starter Pokémon in FireRed Nuzlocke.
Starmie WaterPsychic
Staryu available with Super Rod in various locations. Water/Psychic in Gen 3 is incredible — Psychic type is dominant. Surf, Psychic, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam gives the best coverage in the game. Natural Cure heals status. Blazing fast.
Snorlax Normal
Two guaranteed encounters (Route 12 and 16). Enormous HP and Sp.Def tanks almost anything. Rest + Sleep Talk or Body Slam + Shadow Ball. Can wall Sabrina, Agatha, and Lorelei. One of the safest Pokémon to bring into any fight.
Nidoking PoisonGround
Nidoran♂ available on Route 3. Early Moon Stone evolution gives you a fully evolved Pokémon before Misty. Enormous movepool — Earthquake, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Megahorn. Handles Lt. Surge, Koga, and Blaine. One of the most versatile Pokémon in Kanto.
Alakazam Psychic
Abra available on Routes 5/6. Psychic type in Gen 3 has very few counters. Massive Sp.Atk and Speed. Sweeps Koga, Bruno's Fighting types, and contributes everywhere. Trade evolution required — if you can get it, it dominates.
A
A-Tier — Extremely Reliable
Strong Pokémon with great typing and matchups across Kanto.
Blastoise Water
Best starter for a safe run. Handles Brock, Blaine, Giovanni. Ice Beam for Lance's Dragons. Solid bulk and reliable throughout the entire game. Never a liability.
Venusaur GrassPoison
Sleep Powder is the best move for Nuzlocke safety. Handles Misty, Lt. Surge (with Razor Leaf), Giovanni. Leech Seed + Toxic stalls anything. First two gyms are free wins. Excellent starter choice.
Lapras WaterIce
Gift Pokémon in Silph Co. — guaranteed encounter. Water/Ice with high HP and Sp.Def. Ice Beam destroys Lance's Dragons. Surf, Thunderbolt, Psychic for coverage. Comes at level 25, immediately useful.
Jolteon Electric
Eevee gift in Celadon City. Blazing fast Electric type with Thunderbolt. Handles Lorelei's Water/Ice types and Lance's Gyarados (4× weak). Shadow Ball for Agatha. Best Eevee evolution for Nuzlocke.
Dodrio NormalFlying
Doduo available on Routes 16-18. Extremely high Attack and Speed. Drill Peck and Tri Attack hit hard. Handles Erika and Bruno. Early Bird ability prevents sleep. Surprisingly powerful and often underrated.
Hypno Psychic
Drowzee available on Route 11. Budget Alakazam — not as powerful but doesn't need trade evolution. Hypnosis + Dream Eater is reliable. Handles Koga and Bruno. Decent bulk for a Psychic type.
B
B-Tier — Solid Team Members
Good Pokémon that reliably fill important roles on your team.
Charizard FireFlying
Rough early game against Brock and Misty. Shines mid-game with Flamethrower and Fly. Handles Erika and contributes against Lorelei's Jynx. Metal Claw at Lv.13 gets past Brock. Risky but rewarding starter.
Dugtrio Ground
Diglett's Cave encounter — Arena Trap is unique. Fastest Ground type available. Earthquake sweeps Lt. Surge, Koga (grounded Pokémon), and Agatha's Poison types. Frail but hits hard and fast.
Golem RockGround
Geodude available in Mt. Moon. Rock/Ground with huge Defense. Handles Lt. Surge completely (immune to Electric). Earthquake + Rock Slide covers many threats. Trade evolution required.
Primeape Fighting
Mankey available on Route 22. Low Kick destroys Brock even with Charmander starter. Cross Chop is powerful. Handles Giovanni's team. Fast and aggressive but somewhat frail.
Vileplume GrassPoison
Oddish available on Routes 5/6. Sleep Powder provides Nuzlocke safety. Handles Misty and Giovanni's Ground types. Decent bulk with Grass/Poison typing. Not flashy but reliable.
Arcanine Fire
Growlithe available on Routes 7/8 (FireRed exclusive). Intimidate reduces physical damage. Flamethrower + Extreme Speed is strong. Handles Erika and Lorelei's Jynx. Needs Fire Stone to evolve.
C
C-Tier — Situationally Useful
Decent Pokémon with notable limitations. Good in specific matchups.
Pidgeot NormalFlying
Pidgey available on Route 1. Everyone's first encounter. Decent Speed, Fly for utility. Handles Erika's Grass types. Falls off late game as stats become mediocre. Reliable early, average later.
Rhydon GroundRock
Rhyhorn available in Safari Zone. Enormous Attack and Defense. Earthquake is devastating. 4× weak to Water and Grass is a huge liability. Use only in matchups where you know it's safe.
Gengar GhostPoison
Gastly in Pokémon Tower. Levitate gives Ground immunity. Hypnosis + Shadow Ball is strong. Best counter for Sabrina and Agatha. Needs trade evolution. Frail but powerful with immunity to Normal and Fighting.
Clefable Normal
Clefairy in Mt. Moon (rare). Huge movepool — can learn almost any TM. Cosmic Power for bulk. Not great offensively but incredibly versatile. Can fill any role your team needs.
Electrode Electric
Voltorb in Power Plant. Fastest Pokémon available before E4. Thunderbolt hits hard. But frail and limited movepool. Good for fast Electric coverage if you don't have Jolteon.
D
D-Tier — Below Average
These Pokémon have significant flaws. Only use if no better options.
Raticate Normal
Rattata on Route 1. Hyper Fang hits decently early game. Super Fang halves opponent HP. Falls off hard after mid-game as stats are too low. Replace when possible.
Fearow NormalFlying
Spearow on Route 3. Drill Peck is strong. Faster than Pidgeot but similar stat problems. Slightly better offensively than Pidgeot but worse bulk. Average overall.
Butterfree BugFlying
Caterpie in Viridian Forest. Compound Eyes Sleep Powder (97.5% accuracy) is useful early. But terrible stats mean it falls off after Misty. Replace once you get better options.
Parasect BugGrass
Paras in Mt. Moon. Spore (100% sleep) is the only reason to use it. Bug/Grass has terrible defensive typing with 4× Fire weakness. Too slow and frail for serious use.
F
F-Tier — Avoid if Possible
These Pokémon actively hurt your run. Replace immediately.
Farfetch'd NormalFlying
Trade in Vermilion City. Terrible stats across the board. Stick item boosts crit rate but doesn't compensate for awful power. Literally any other Flying type is better.
Lickitung Normal
Trade on Route 18. Slow, weak, and doesn't evolve in Gen 3. No notable moves or abilities. There is never a reason to use Lickitung on a Nuzlocke team.
Unown Psychic
Available in Tanoby Chambers. Can only learn Hidden Power. Terrible stats. More of a collectible than a battler. The worst Pokémon you can bring to any fight.

Best Starter for FireRed Nuzlocke

Squirtle is the safest starter. Blastoise has great bulk, handles Brock and Blaine easily, and Ice Beam covers Lance's Dragons. You almost never regret picking Squirtle.

Bulbasaur is equally great. Sleep Powder is the best Nuzlocke move. Auto-wins the first two gyms. Leech Seed + Toxic stalls anything. Grass/Poison gives useful resistances.

Charmander is hard mode. Struggles against Brock and Misty. Metal Claw at Lv.13 gets past Brock. Shines mid-game onward but requires careful play early. Only pick if you're experienced.

Gen 3 Reminder: In FireRed/LeafGreen, the physical/special split is based on TYPE, not individual moves. All Water, Fire, Grass, Electric, Ice, Psychic, Dragon, and Dark moves are Special. All Normal, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Bug, Rock, Ghost, and Steel moves are Physical. This affects which Pokémon are actually good!
