Hardcore Nuzlocke Rules Explained
A Hardcore Nuzlocke takes the standard Nuzlocke challenge and cranks the difficulty to maximum. It's the ruleset used by most Nuzlocke YouTubers and is considered the "true" way to Nuzlocke by experienced players. Here's exactly what it involves.
The Full Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset
1. All Standard Nuzlocke Rules Apply
First encounter only on each route, faint equals death, nickname everything. These are the baseline.
2. Level Caps (The Biggest Change)
You cannot level any Pokémon above the next Gym Leader's highest Pokémon. For example, if the next Gym Leader's ace is Level 25, none of your Pokémon can exceed Level 25. This prevents overleveling, which is the #1 way players make standard Nuzlockes too easy.
Level caps force you to win through strategy, not raw power. Every Gym Leader becomes a genuine boss fight instead of something you can steamroll by grinding.
3. Set Mode (No Free Switches)
Change the battle style to "Set" in the options. In "Shift" mode (the default), when you KO an opponent's Pokémon, the game asks if you want to switch. In Set mode, you don't get this free switch — your current Pokémon stays in against whatever comes next.
This makes every KO more dangerous because you can't freely pivot to a counter.
4. No Items in Battle
You cannot use Potions, Full Restores, X-items, or any bag items during battle. The only items allowed are held items (like Leftovers or Berries). This eliminates the safety net of spam-healing through tough fights.
5. Dupes Clause (Usually Included)
If your first encounter on a route is a species you already have, you can skip it and find a different one. This adds variety and prevents your team from being filled with duplicates.
Optional Additions
No Legendary Pokémon — Most Hardcore players ban legendaries. They're too powerful and defeat the purpose of the challenge.
Species Clause — Extended version of Dupes Clause that counts the entire evolutionary line, not just the exact species.
Limit Pokémon Center visits — Some players only allow one heal per Pokémon Center, or even ban Centers entirely between gyms.
Hardcore vs Standard Nuzlocke: What's Different?
In a standard Nuzlocke, you can grind to Level 100 and use 50 Full Restores per fight. The only real threats are unexpected crits and coverage moves. In a Hardcore Nuzlocke, every single Gym Leader is a genuine challenge because you're fighting at equal levels with no healing.
The difficulty jump is significant. Many experienced Nuzlocke players who have never lost a standard Nuzlocke will wipe multiple times in their first Hardcore run.
